How to Add Cocoa to Crisco to Make a Great Smelling Body Cream

Creating beauty products at home is safe, fun and a highly effective means of personal care. Expensive creams and lotions restore essential oils and reverse drying and the damaging effects of pollution, aging and sun exposure. You can obtain a lot of these same beneficial effects by using inexpensive Crisco and mixing other products in the food aisle such as cocoa to make your own emollients. You can achieve the desired results with little hassle. Does this Spark an idea?

Make sure you have no food allergies to Crisco, which is essentially a vegetable shortening made of cottonseed oil, by applying a small dab to your inside wrist, rubbing and waiting a few minutes for any negative reaction.

Keep the Crisco at room temperature after you have done the patch test. This will make it less irritiating when you rub it on after a shower.

Apply a few drops of baby oil to a tablespoon of Crisco to assist in smoothing on the product and mix well. The oil will trap the moisture in the skin and help with hydration.

Add a quarter teaspoon of cocoa to the Crisco and baby oil mixture and once again mix well. The Crisco, which is essentially colorless and odorless, will take on a warm brown sheen and a rich fragrance.

Add shimmer powder as a final ingredient to create a glowing effect when you smooth it on your legs and arms.

Tips

- Experiment using a little less and then a little more until you get the combination of Crisco and cocoa to your liking.

About Zenmed Derma Cleanse Acne Treatment

ZenMed's doctor-formulated products address a number of skin problems, such as acne, rosacea, eczema, stretch marks and other scars. The brand offers multi-product "systems" for each of these conditions.

ZenMed skincare products combine natural and medicinally proven ingredients. The brand offers "reasonably priced products" but doesn't resort to cheaper alternatives in its formulas. Does this Spark an idea?

The ZenMed Brand

ZenMed, which integrates Eastern and Western principles, created the Derma Cleanse treatment in 1999.

The company's products include face masks, gels, creams and capsules to treat blemishes and scars internally and externally.

ZenMed products do not contain parabens, petrochemicals, animal ingredients, synthetic dyes or fragrances.

Derma Cleanse Acne Treatment

ZenMed offers a large selection of products for facial acne, body acne and post-acne discoloration and damage.

The basic Derma Cleanse system treats three different skin types: combination skin, oily skin and mature/dry skin. Each of these treatments include four different products.

The combination skin system includes the AHA/BHA (alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids) complex for exfoliation and pH balance, facial cleansing gel, sebum regulating moisturizer and acne gel.

The oily skin system includes the gentle cleansing gel, botanical acne mask, acne gel and the sebum-regulating moisturizer to detoxify the skin.

The mature/dry skin system takes a spa-like approach for older people who suffer from frequent breakouts. The package includes the gentle cleansing gel, sebum-regulating moisturizer, AHA/BHA complex and a renewing serum.

Instructions for Use

According to ZenMed's "Frequently Asked Questions" page, the brand sells full-size bottles, which should last between two and four months.

Use the Derma Clease system twice a day for the skin. Each system's page includes specialized instructions for the use of the products.

The brand claims that the user should see a difference within three days of using the ZenMed Derma Cleanse acne treatment. The company, however, advises the customer to be patient while using the products, as the Derma Cleanse system is intended to create long-term results.

Users should use sunscreen while outside. Generally, they should avoid going out into the sun as much as possible, as the skin is more sensitive to sun damage.

Pregnant and nursing women should avoid the intake of the capsules included in the Derma Cleanse Acne Treatment.

Considerations

Before purchasing the Derma Cleanse Acne Treatment, the user must identify her skin type. A number of diagnostic tests can help the user determine whether she has oily, combination or dry skin.

The user should also read reviews on websites, such as RateItAll or Amazon.com, to find out whether the product can improve his skin. He should consult his dermatologist and ask whether medical professionals recommend ZenMed products for such skin conditions.

How to Purchase

One can purchase the ZenMed Derma Cleanse Acne Treatment on the official ZenMed website or other Internet-based stores, such as Amazon or eBay.

The ZenMed website has "Frequently Asked Questions" sections as well as live customer support if the consumer has any questions about his order.

How to Strip Oil Out of Your Hair

Cooking oil splattering in hair, the use of cooking oil to loosen extensions, killing lice with essential oils or just not washing your hair for several days can all lead to an oily scalp or hair. The excess oil will not only make your hair look dirty, but also weigh it down. Washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo multiple times may be enough to remove the oil, depending on your hair type and type of oil. Absorb oils by sprinkling baby powder in the hair if washing your hair doesn't remove all of the oils. Use astringents as a last resort. Although they will strip the oil from your hair, they also strip oils that condition your hair and scalp, leaving your hair dry, brittle or straw-like. Does this Spark an idea?

Wash Your Hair

Pour a quarter-sized drop of a clarifying shampoo into the palm of your hand.

Rub the shampoo into your scalp. Massage the shampoo into your hair, working from the scalp down to the end of your hair.

Rinse your head under running water to remove the shampoo from your scalp. Repeat the process up to two more times.

Apply a moisturizing conditioner to your scalp and head to restore moisture to your hair. Allow it to sit in on your hair for one to three minutes. Rinse clean under cool running water.

Baby Powder

Sprinkle baby powder liberally over your scalp and throughout your hair.

Allow the baby powder to soak up the oil in your scalp and hair. Leave the baby powder on overnight, if possible.

Wash and condition your hair as described in Section 1.

Witch Hazel or Lemon Juice

Combine 1/2 cup of witch hazel or lemon juice with 1 cup of room temperature water. This will act as an astringent to strip the oil from your hair.

Pour small amounts of the liquid astringent into your hair and scalp, massaging it into your hair so it is fully absorbed.

Place a shower cap over your head to keep the liquid from drying out. Leave the astringent in your hair for one hour.

Wash and condition your hair as described in Section 1.

How to Choose Lotion for Oily Skin

Oily skin can be frustrating. Prone to clogged pores and breakouts, it can feel dirty and difficult to manage. There are a few upsides to having oily skin: this skin type ages less quickly, and today's market offers many options specially formulated for this skin type. Moisturizing is an especially tricky step in the care for oily skin. Choose a lotion that is best for you. Read on to learn how. Does this Spark an idea?

Understand that oily skin requires special skin products designed to keep pores unclogged. Do not simply use a moisturizing lotion designed for normal skin when your skin is actually oily. Lotions designed for normal skin often include oils as an ingredient. Use this and you'll do yourself more harm than good.

Don't feel that you must apply a lotion to oily skin. Sometimes young people with oily tendencies do not require a moisturizer at all--only other skin care steps, including thorough cleansing. If your skin is nearly always oily, you may want to go without using a lotion and see how that affects your skin.

Look for labels that indicate a formula has been specifically made for your oily skin type when purchasing a lotion at a drug store. Some also include acne-preventing ingredients, since oily skin is often prone to breakouts.

Find the word "balancing" on certain lotions created for oily skin. These products balance the oily aspect, keeping skin dry, yet soft.

Stop by a skin care counter, such as in a local mall or department store, and ask a cosmetologist for recommendations when looking for a lotion for your oily skin. They may have a great product in mind for you, or they may give you several samples to try at home.

Tips

- Apply lotion conservatively to oily skin. A little bit can go a long way.

How to Cut Hair to Look Thicker

Some people are not naturally blessed with thick hair, but there are creative ways to give hair the appearance of having more volume. In addition to styling techniques, the right haircut can make hair look fuller and healthier. A bob or bob variation haircut will give the look of a full, healthy head of hair and is easy to style and maintain. It is cut straight around the head, usually at the jaw line or just below the jaw. Keeping hair short and in one layer will add lift and volume naturally. Does this Spark an idea?

Determine the length of the bob haircut. For a fuller face, a longer bob is a more suitable choice. For a narrow face shape, a shorter, chin-length bob will look best.

Separate the hair into sections: right side, left side, right top of head, left top of head, left nape of neck and right nape of neck. Clip sections into place to hold.

Wet hair. Comb the top section of hair in front of the face and determine the length of the bob. You may choose to keep the front and sides of the bob longer, which is called an angled bob. Cut hair at the desired length.

Use a comb or ruler to determine the angle of the bob around the back of the head. Cut around the nape of the neck until you reach the front section that is already cut.

Unclip the hair one section at a time. Cut the remaining sections to match the hair already cut. Use the previous cut sections as guides, and cut from back to front, angling the front sections if desired.

Dry the hair. Use a flat iron to straighten and smooth if desired.

How to Make Body Scrub With Olive Oil & Brown Sugar

Homemade brown sugar and olive oil scrubs are beneficial to your skin because they help to gently exfoliate the surface layer of dead skin cells. They also remove dirt and excess oil. This leaves your skin clean, rejuvenated and moist without clogging your pores. You can use a homemade brown sugar and olive oil scrub on your face, but they are also good for areas of your body that are dry like your knees, elbows and feet. Does this Spark an idea?

Measure 1/4 cup of olive oil and 1/2 cup brown sugar.

Pour both the olive oil and the brown sugar into a small mixing bowl.

Blend olive oil and brown sugar together. Mix with a spoon or clean hands until the two ingredients are well-blended.

Apply the scrub in the shower. Massage onto your skin in a circular motion.

Allow the scrub to sit on your skin for one minute. Rinse off with warm water.

Tips

- Add 1 tsp. of vitamin E oil to the scrub for its skin healing properties.

Warning

- Do not use a brown sugar scrub on blemished or broken skin because irritation may occur.

Daily Treatment for Acne

Acne is common in teens and young adults, but can affect older adults as well. Acne refers to blemishes caused by blocked and inflamed pores. An effective skin care routine will depend on a number of factors. Causes of acne and skin type should be considered. Does this Spark an idea?

Cleanse

Cleansing the skin gets rid of dirt, oil and bacteria that clogs pores and causes blemishes. It's best to cleanse in the morning and before bed, but no more. Keep in mind that over-cleansing the skin is counterproductive; washing more than twice a day will dry out the skin, causing it to produce more oil and irritate skin further.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells and improves skin texture. This can be done with a washcloth or with a cleansing scrub designed specifically for exfoliating the skin. Exfoliating also helps to get rid of scars and redness left from past blemishes. Some exfoliating scrubs are even made with acne fighting medications to enhance treatment. Exfoliate one to two times per week.

Treat Blemishes

Treat blemishes with an acne fighting medication such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These medications are available in creams, cleansers and moisturizers. How often you use these medications will depend on the strength of the product and your skin type. Most people should apply topical acne medications each time they cleanse their skin. For severe acne, a dermatologist may even recommend an oral medication to take daily. Overuse of acne medications is not recommended, as they will dry out the skin and can cause extreme irritation.

Moisturize

Moisturizing with a facial lotion is essential, even for oily skin. Those with acne should choose a moisturizer that is oil free. Also, look for a lotion that contains SPF, as acne medications can increase the skin's sensitivity to UV rays. Apply moisturizer each time you cleanse your skin.

Considerations

Pay attention to what causes or worsens your breakouts. Some people have food sensitivities that worsen their acne. Also, many women tend to break out just before or during menstruation. Others are sensitive to cigarette smoke. Knowing what irritates your skin is important so that you can avoid those triggers. Also, drinking plenty of water may help your skin quality, as well as being great for your overall health. Most people need at least 2 liters of water per day.

How to Keep Hair Tidy When You Wear it Down

Whether going to a special event, like a wedding, clubbing or even if it's just for your day-to-day life, keeping hair looking as good all day as it does when you first leave the house can present a challenge. While there are some products that can help hold hair for extended periods of time, regular maintenance and upkeep as well as repairing existing damage is just as important to long-lasting hairstyles as the type of hairspray in use. Does this Spark an idea?

Maintain healthy hair. Healthy hair is easier to keep in check. Moisturize regularly and trim split ends.

Braid your hair before bed. This is important if you don't plan on washing your hair before going out the next day. Satin pillowcases can help keep hair undamaged while you sleep.

Repair heat and styling damage. Damage can cause hair to rebel, sticking out at all sides. You can tell if your hair is heat damaged by pulling out a hair and running your fingernail along the length of the hair from end to end. Drop the hair in a glass of water. If it doesn't uncurl, your hair is heat damaged. Upgrade your styling tools to more modern devices, like those made with ceramic, to decrease damage. Lay off using the blow dryer, curling or flat irons when you can. Apply a serum to hair before styling with heat; this will protect your hair.

Use aerosol hairspray. Aerosol cans deliver a finer mist over a wider range of hair, which holds hair in place without stiffness or crispness. Don't hold the can too close to the hair; 10 to 12 inches of distance works best.

Combat flyaway hair due to humidity or natural frizz with a smoothing serum. A small dollop, the size of a nickel, is typically all you need. Rub it between your palms and apply to your hair, starting at the tips and working your way up, using the least over the scalp, which is naturally the oiliest part of hair.

Apply lacquer. Lacquer is stronger than hairspray and will create a rock-hard hold. Like hairspray, lacquer is sprayed onto the hair.

Plan your day accordingly. Bring travel hairspray and any other hair maintenance products for quick hair taming. Be aware of what your hair can and cannot withstand; if you're going for a ride in a convertible, cover your hair with a scarf. Don't expect the impossible.

How to Treat Oily Skin Naturally

Keeping a complexion smooth and having a youthful appearance is difficult with the best of skin types but with oily skin it is even more difficult. You can wash it, cleanse it, watch after your skin all the time and still get nowhere. Try to treat the oily nature in a natural way to keep it looking youthful and beautiful. Does this Spark an idea?

Keep your skin clean. Limit washing your skin to two to three times a day but try to keep it free from dirt and grime. These can cause pores to clog and gives acne a foothold. Use hot water as it dissolves the oil better than warm or cold water. Also use a highly mineralized water, not tap water. Choose a soap that is lightly medicated or has antibacterial cleansing lotion in it. Don't rub the soap into the skin hard as it can help clog the skin pores.

Use a toner on the skin to close those pores. The heat of a summer day and hot water used in washing your skin only serve to open the pores wider allowing more oil to flow out. Close the pores with the toner and for an even better cool feeling store it in the ice box.

Apply an oil-free moisturizer after thorough washing and cleansing. This will help the skin tighten and look younger.

Avoid most acne creams and lotions. They have a drying effect on the skin and causes more oil to be excreted. Use a deep cleaning exfoliant once a week to deep clean the skin if scaliness becomes a problem.

How to Cut Hair Into an Uneven Wispy Bob

Update your look this season with a sophisticated but playful wispy bob haircut. Like the classic bob haircut, this style is worn above the shoulders and typically involves very straight-cut ends. The wispy bob hairstyle is also worn above the shoulders, but the ends of the hair vary in length, creating both movement and texture. To cut this hairstyle yourself, you just need a few tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Spread the newspaper on the floor to catch the falling hairs. Place your chair on top of the newspaper and set up the mirror in front of you or the person whose hair you're cutting.

Spray hair with the water mister so it's damp. It's easiest to cut slightly wet hair.

Divide the hair into seven sections: the left side, top, right side, left crown, right crown, left nape of the neck and right nape of the neck. Leave about half an inch of hair down around the perimeter of your head. Use this hair to determine how long you would like your wispy bob to be. Comb the front of this hair straight down and cut it straight across with your scissors. Do not hold the hair taught, but rather let it hang between your fingers while you cut. Cut the rest of the hair the same length.

Continue to comb and cut the rest of your hair to match the length of your first section. To make sure the back sections match the front sections, comb them straight up into the air and hold them with your fingers. They should be the same height. Cut every section but the crown of the head.

Part the hair down the middle, when you reach the crown sections. Cut these sections as you cut the others, making sure they are the same length as the other sections. Once you've finished cutting, you've completed cutting your bob.

Start about 3 or 4 inches away from the ends of your hair, and drag your razor toward the ends. Cut inward slightly so the razor cuts diagonally from your starting point. This creates a subtle layering effect that produces the wispy look. Be careful not to cut yourself, of course. Repeat this razor motion around the entire head. If you're cutting your own hair, use two mirrors when you do the back so you can see what you're doing. Once you complete this around the perimeter of your head, you will have removed a good amount of the bulk.

Twist the bangs around one of your fingers and cut into them on a strong diagonal line. You should cut almost straight into each strand, but angle your scissors slightly so they cut very steep diagonal shapes. This process will thin your bangs to match your hair. Cut until you see a feathered effect in the bangs. Remember, the bangs should stay the same length as they were before, but with some slight variety in the texture.

Tips

- Always have two mirrors on hand so you can make sure to cut the back of your hair as easily as the front if you're cutting your own hair.

Warning

- Be very careful when working with scissors and razors, as you can easily cut yourself.

How to Cut Maltese Hair Near the Eyes

Like many small show breeds, Maltese dogs demand constant grooming. If you neglect your grooming duties with your Maltese, you may find its fur soon becomes a matted mess. Besides the matting and tangles that occur on the dog’s body, the hair of a Maltese will quickly grow over its eyes, blocking its view. Although dogs rely less on their eyes than humans, it is still a good idea to keep the hair near the eyes of your Maltese trimmed back between professional grooming appointments.

Secure your Maltese in place by putting it in a harness, then attaching the harness to a leash. You can sit on the leash while you groom your dog or tie off the leash to an object.

Mix water and a couple of drops of conditioner into a clean spray bottle. This solution will act as a simple detangler for your Maltese’s fur.

Spray the top of your dog’s head and work the solution down into the fur over its eyes. Avoid spraying your dog in the face.

Brush the fur out thoroughly to ensure there are no mats or snags.

Snip the excess hair away from the eyes with your trimming scissors. If your dog is restless, it may be a good idea to have a friend hold the dog’s head in place to prevent injury.

How to Cleanse Oily Skin

Oily skin can be hard to manage. It is shiny, with a thick and dull texture. Acne, blackheads and coarse pores are problems that often come along with oily skin. You can improve your oily skin's appearance by learning proper cleansing techniques. Does this Spark an idea?

Find a cleanser for oily skin. Choose a foaming, cream or gel cleanser that works best with your skin type and routine.

Choose a cleanser that only removes excess oil from your face. Your skin needs some oil to remain healthy. Stripping away all the oil can trigger your skin to produce even more oil.

Wash your face 2 to 3 times, daily. Apply the cleanser evenly and remove with warm water, make-up removing wipe or a cleansing wipe. Be sure to remove all of the cleanser. Leaving some on your face may lead to clogged pores.

Drink plenty of water to properly hydrate your skin and help it appear more youthful and healthy.

Utilize exfoliating treatments and masks on a regular basis to deeply cleanse your skin and pores.

Stick with a cleansing routine. Your skin responds to regular cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing. You will begin to see results once you have established a daily routine.

Tips

- Consider changing your diet. What you consume directly effects how your skin appears and acts. Include plenty of leafy green vegetables and low-fat foods, and eliminate foods cooked in oils.

How to Make Colored Body Oils and Fragrant Roll-Ons

Body oil can be slathered on after a shower or long, relaxing bath. Pinch pennies by creating your own body oils at home. You'll also have several options about how to scent and color your body oil. When mixing your oils, make sure to do it in the kitchen or bathroom. Oil can stain carpet and other fabric, so create your body oils in an area of your home that's easy to clean. Packaging your body oil in a roll-on container makes application easy. Does this Spark an idea?

Mix 8 ounces of 100 percent pure sweet almond oil with 8 ounces of 100 percent pure jojoba oil and 2 tablespoons of vitamin E oil in a bowl.

Add a few drops of scented essential oils for fragrance. Choose rose, lavender, orange or chamomile oil. You can find essential fruit oils, too, such as grapefruit or lemon. Craft stores offer artificial fragrances as well.

Color the oil using molecules from flowers. Using a mortar and pestle, crush the flower in water to extract the color molecules. Add a few drops of the color to your body oil.

Package the scented oil in a roll-on perfume bottle. You can also pour the oil into a plastic or glass storage bottle. Make sure the top of the bottle or container is on tight and shake the mixture.

Store your oil in an area that's cool and dry.

Tips

- Flowers get their color from pigment molecules. The same colored molecule can make different flowers different colors. You can also add either fresh or dried flowers to your oils.

- You can gather all the supplies to make homemade body oils from a craft store or beauty supply shops.

Warning

- If you have a nut allergy, you may want to stay away from almond oil in your body oil mixture. Instead, choose extra virgin olive oil, grape seed oil or coconut oil. Use the same amount as you would use almond oil.

- Some people have an allergic reaction to fragrance oils. If you've never used certain fragrance oils, test them before you add them to your body oil mixture.

How to Diet to Combat Oily Skin

Heredity plays a large role in determining if you have oily skin. Hormone levels can also effect the oiliness of your skin. Therefore, puberty, pregnancy and menopause often cause oily skin. The good news is if you have oily skin when you are young, you look younger when you are older. People with oily skin have younger, more supple complexions with fewer wrinkles than people with dry skin. Does this Spark an idea?

Increase your consumption of foods that are high in vitamin B. A deficiency in vitamin B sometimes leads to oily skin. Foods that are high in vitamin B include whole grains, nuts and legumes.

Limit the amount of fats that you eat. Meat and oil should be eaten in moderation. Eliminate meat from your dinner a few nights a week, choose low fat salad dressings and avoid frying foods.

Watch out for foods that contain iodine. Studies suggest that a diet high in iodine contributes to an increase in oily skin and acne. Iodine is found in fish and iodized salt.

Snack on fresh fruits and vegetables instead of sweets. The connection between sugars and oily skin are not proved, but most sweet snacks also contain high fat and iodized salt. Best to avoid sweets for healthy skin.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and flush out oils and toxins from your skin. Be sure to have at least 8 glasses each day.

Tips

- Exercise regularly to stay healthy and to reduce stress in your life. High stress levels contribute to oily skin.

How to Treat Oily Skin

Both women and men are plagued by skin problems and this includes oily skin or excess sebum. Often, oily skin is more cumbersome to deal with than acne and is largely a byproduct of genetics and hormones. This makes it more difficult to control. So when you want your appearance and personality to shine, but not your face, try these tips to help treat oily skin. Does this Spark an idea?

Cleanse you skin at least twice a day with a gentle cleanser designed for oily skin. Avoid irritating the skin with harsh soaps, perfumes and overly hot water. The goal is to treat the oily skin without causing new skincare problems. Cleansers with alpha hydroxy may provide additional benefits by reducing oil and deep cleaning pores, without over drying the skin.

Remove excess oil with an astringent or toner as this will also close the pores and reduce the chance of breakouts or debris clogged pores. Witch hazel makes for a good mild astringent but it may not be strong enough to treat oily skin. Choose from a skincare line you know is compatible with your skin or that is dermatologist recommended.

Apply a stronger, medicated astringent and/or cream for oily skin areas prone to or affected by acne. Look for ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Limit to the T-zone or oily areas of the skin.

Consider topical retinoids such as creams containing retinol or retin-A. These ingredients are often found in anti-aging creams but also work well for acne and excessively oily skin. However, caution is needed when using retinoids as they can cause over drying of the skin, sun sensitivity and other reactions. Many over-the-counter products are mild but start the application process slowly, every other day or so, for best results. Then, use daily or as needed to treat oily skin.

Follow up your skin regimen with an oil-free moisturizer or one designed for your skin type. If you have combination skin, limit application to the normal and dry areas. Unless your skin is very oily, most often a moisturizer is recommended to help maintain the skin's moisture and acid balance.

Exfoliate your skin at least two to three times a week to remove dead skin that may trap oil and dirt. Additionally, try an oatmeal or clay-based facial mask once or twice a week to help remove excess oil and invigorate the skin.

Wear makeup that is non-comodegenic and typically oil-free. Try mineral powder or rice powder to set makeup and absorb oil. Keep blotter tissues available for breakthrough spots if needed.

Discuss with your physician or dermatologist about any alternatives related to hormone-induced oily skin, whether it is severe enough to warrant a prescription or if a change in a current medication, such as birth control, is needed to treat oily skin.

Tips

- Limit your exposure to the sun and wear facial lotion or makeup with an SPF of 15 or above.

Warning

- Investigate product labeling thoroughly for potential interactions to other skincare products, sensitive skin or the sun.

How to Give a Golden Doodle a Hair Cut

Lots of fine, wavy hair sometimes equals a thick tangled mess on a mature goldendoodle. This new breed of poodles crossed with a golden retriever and makes a terrific family pet. However, they do require a little more maintenance than your average dog. Keeping your goldendoodle's hair trimmed, especially around the eyes and anal area, is especially important for good pet hygiene. Pam Matthews, a breeder of goldendoodles, suggests to trim the hair on your adult goldendoodle once every four to six weeks, depending on the coat of your dog.

Find a good spot to give your dog a haircut. Keep in mind there will be a lot of hair to clean up afterward. Make clean up easier by performing the haircut in a non-carpeted area, such as a garage, basement, bathtub or outside if the weather is warm.

Use a slicker brush to give your goldendoodle an overall brushing. Brush with the grain of the hair and away from his skin, being careful not to scrape him, suggests Colleen Hill of awardwinninggrooming.com. Pay attention to particularly knotted areas, such as his behind and under the armpits. If there are too many knots, leave this area to be trimmed off instead of brushed through.

Pass a sturdy, wide-toothed comb through the freshly brushed hair to get out all the smaller knots.

Put a long, snap-on comb attachment on the clippers.

Acquaint your dog to the clippers. Turn the clippers on and show them to your dog. Let him sniff them out. This should alleviate any jumpiness from the dog as you begin to trim.

Starting on his back, begin to pass the clippers through your dog's hair. Always go in a downward motion with the grain of his hair. Leave at least 1.5 to 2 inches in length of hair on your goldendoodle, suggests Dee Geerish of goldendoodleworld.com, as his body needs this layer of hair as protection from both the heat and the cold. Use the clippers to trim the hair on his body only.

Switch to sharp scissors with a short blade to trim the hair around his eyes. Tidy up the hair around his mouth and trim off any small, matted areas that would be too difficult to brush out.

Tips

- Bathing your dog after a haircut will get rid of any loose trimmed hair. Be sure to thoroughly dry your goldendoodle after the bath.

Warning

- You may want to leash your dog during a bath to keep him in one spot, depending on the personality of your goldendoodle.

How to Make Slippery Body Oil

Luxurious scented body oils are not only great for your skin, but also great to use for a massage. One advantage to making your own body oil is that you can make a scent that appeals to you by simply changing a few of the ingredients. Homemade body oils are easy to make with a few select ingredients found at your local health food store. Does this Spark an idea?

Visit your local health food store to find the ingredients. Most health food stores will carry all of the ingredients needed. If the store does not carry them, they can be ordered for you.

Find a glass or plastic bottle to store your oil in. The bottle must be able to hold up to 1 1/2 cups of liquid. Use a container that has a lid to seal your oil.

Place the rose petals into the bottle first, if you are using them. These are for decorative purposes.

Place the coconut butter in a small bowl. Fill a larger bowl halfway with warm water. Place the small bowl of coconut butter into the large bowl filled with water. This will gently melt the coconut butter into a liquid.

Place the funnel into the mouth of the bottle. Pour the melted coconut butter into the bottle. Add 4 tbsp. of macademia oil, 4 tbsp. of sweet almond oil, 4 drops of sweet orange essential oil, 4 of drops sandalwood essential oil, and 4 drops of frankincense essential oil to the bottle. Place the lid on the bottle and tighten it.

Shake the bottle well to mix the ingredients thoroughly. Shake again before each use.

Decorate the bottle with ribbon or lace, if desired. This is a good idea if you are using the oil as a gift.

Tips

- Experiment with your own ingredients to find a scent that is most pleasing to you.

- Use oil immediately after a shower for best results.

Warning

- Do not ingest the body oil.

Cures for Oily Faces

The skin's sebaceous glands sometimes produce too much oil, resulting in an oily face. Oily skin makes your face look shiny, and it can contribute to dermatological conditions including acne and seborrheic dermatitis. You can use at least four topical treatments to remove excess oil and clear up acne. Does this Spark an idea?

Soaps and Cleansers

One of the simplest and most effective treatments for oily skin is to wash your face with soap or a non-soap cleanser. Because soaps are alkaline, they can irritate the skin and even promote the growth of acne-causing bacteria. A safer alternative is a hypoallergenic synthetic cleanser that is pH-balanced to have a pH of 5.5, like your skin.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide has been a popular acne treatment since the 1950s. It has a strong antibacterial effect on Propionibacterium acnes, the species of bacteria that causes acne. It also helps dry up excess oil and increases exfoliation of the skin's outer layer. Benzoyl peroxide can cause skin irritation, so start with a low concentration, such as 2.5 percent, and test it on a small area of your face.

Retinoids

Available by prescription, retinoids are chemically related to vitamin A. Retin-A is the best-known retinoid medication, but several brands of retinoids are available either as a cream or as a gel. Retinoids can cause irritation. They may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so apply sunblock before spending time outdoors. In some cases, retinoids may temporarily make acne worse during the first few weeks of use.

Salicylic Acid

You can find salicylic acid in many over-the-counter acne remedies, including creams, liquids, gels and wipes. Salicylic acid helps to prevent clogged pores by helping the outer layer of the skin flake off. Although most people tolerate salicylic acid well, some people have allergic reactions to it. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, avoid combining salicylic acid with benzoyl peroxide or abrasive scrubs to avoid causing excessive irritation.

How to Treat oily skin with tomatoes

Tomatoes are very nutritious for us to eat. But they are also good to help treat oily skin because they contain natural AHA's, which can help to balance the pH levels. So when you are adding one to your salad, save one for your skin as well. Does this Spark an idea?

Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil on a stovetop.

Place the tomatoes into the boiling water and allow them to boil for 2 to 3 minutes. Once time has elapsed, remove the tomatoes from the pot and place in a bowl of cold water and ice cubes.

Allow the tomatoes to cool and then remove them from the ice bath onto a towel or several paper towels. Pat them dry and then let them sit until completely cool.

Once cooled, gently rub the tomatoes to remove the skin. Once the skin is removed, you will need to cut them in half, crush them slightly and remove the seeds.

After removing the seeds, place the crushed tomatoes into the food processor and pulse until pureed.

Place the pureed tomatoes into a bowl and take them to your bathroom so you can prepare to use them as a mask.

On clean and dry skin, begin applying a layer of the tomato puree onto your face and neck, if needed. The puree is slippery, so once you apply it you may want to lie down so it stays in place. Keep the tomato puree on your face for 15 minutes.

Rinse you face after 15 minutes has passed and then continue with your regular regimen.

Tips

- To make the tomato mask thicker, you can add uncooked oatmeal. This can help the mask stay on your face better.

How to Cut Hair for Toddlers

The inability for many toddlers to sit still for long periods of time, as well as many children having fears associated with scissors, can make cutting your toddler's hair challenging. While going to a professional who is experienced in handling rambunctious toddlers may be tempting, it can also be an additional expense that you can't afford. With some practice and patience, you should be able to learn how to cut your toddler's hair while helping to alleviate their fears.

Gather all of the equipment you will need for cutting your toddler's hair ahead of time, and place it in a location that is easily reachable from where you will be working.

Drape a towel around your toddler's shoulders with the hair on top of the towel. Spray the hair with water to get it wet. Once the hair is wet, spray it with a detangler that is specifically made for children.

Comb your toddler's hair gently, parting the hair evenly along the center of the scalp to get an even haircut. Section off the hair with clips to keep hair you are not working with out of your way. Working in sections prevents the need to re-do steps as your toddler moves and messes up her hair.

Cut hair from front to back since your toddler will likely be the most still during the beginning of the hair cut. Cut the bangs first, using one hand to hold your toddler's head still.

Use your fingers as guides by holding them at the length that you will be cutting your toddler's hair. Make small, even snips below your fingers. Continue this step until all of the hair is cut and even.

Tips

- Have your toddler sit in front of a TV or mirror as you cut.

- You can do a simple hot oil treatment with just jojoba oil. Place a teaspoon of warm jojoba oil on your hair and cover with a shower cap.

The Effects of Alcohol on Hair

Many hair care products contain alcohol. It is added to provide thickness to the product and protect it from bacteria such as microbes. Alcohol also acts as a preservative, helping products last longer on store shelves. While alcohol has some benefits, it also damages hair, making it appear dry, flaky, dull and lifeless. Does this Spark an idea?

Many Reasons Manufacturers Add Alcohol

Longer shelf life is among the many reasons manufacturers add alcohol to hair care products. Alcohol is used as a preservative because it evaporates quickly. The problem is that when it evaporates, it takes a bit of your hair's moisture with it. Alcohol is also added to thicken hair products, keep them from foaming and protect them from microbes. The types of alcohols used in hair products differ from grain alcohols made by fermenting starch, sugar and other carbohydrates. The alcohols have many cosmetic uses, but when used in excess, cause your locks to look deprived.

Short-Chain Alcohols

Short-chain alcohols include ethanol, propyl and isopropyl alcohol. Ethanol is typically found in hair sprays. Due to a low molecule weight, these alcohols evaporate quickly and are used in hair care products to decrease the time it takes for hair to dry. You have approximately 100,000 hairs on your head. Each hair is protected by a cuticle, or outside layer, which protects the inner layers. When the cuticle gets dry, it causes the inner hair fibers to fray, making your hair appear dry and frizzy.

Fatty Alcohols

Not all alcohols are bad for your hair. Fatty alcohols, or long-chain alcohols, such as stearyl and cetyl actually help to hydrate hair. These alcohols originate from natural sources and contain a high carbon content, meaning these molecules are oilier or fatty. Fatty alcohols are added as a moisturizer in hair care products. Hair looks smoother and softer because the cuticles are weighed down. If used in excess, these fatty alcohols combine with the natural sebum on the scalp, forming a sticky substance that makes hair appear greasy.

Alcohol-Free Products

Some hair products don't contain alcohol, advertising "alcohol-free" on the label. If unsure, read the ingredients.

Give Your Hair a Rest

No matter the products you are using, give your hair a chance to breathe. Avoid washing your hair a couple days a week. This helps to keep your hair shiny, bright and moisturized. When hair is wet, it stretches, making it more vulnerable to cuticle damage and breakage. If you need to wash your hair every day, try using a mild shampoo. If you have curly or dry hair, avoid washing your hair every day, as washing causes it to appear even more dried out.

How to Reduce Pitted Acne Scars

Acne causes pimples, cysts, nodules and a few other skin eruptions. These wounds to the skin result in scar tissue forming around the wound site. Because people scar in different ways due to genetic and overall health, some acne scars leave just a discoloration while others leave pitted scars. These types of scars look like small craters on the skin and for some people are very unattractive. But there are a variety of methods that have proven helpful for some people. Nothing is guaranteed but some improvement can usually be expected. Does this Spark an idea?

Apply an over-the-counter scar cream or lotion once or twice a day. Look for one that offers treatment for pitted scars. With so many scar treatment products on the market it usually takes time to find the ones that actually improve the appearance of your scars. Scar creams and lotions are made with herbs, botanicals, chemicals or a combination of all three. The best thing to do is to choose one product and use it consistently for a few weeks or months. If no improvement occurs, move on to another product.

Have a dermatologist perform dermabrasion. This medical technique uses a handheld rotating wire brush. The doctor brushes the pitted acne scars to sand them down. The removal of the top layer of skin allows new skin to grow that is in better condition and less pitted. The American Society of Dermatologic Surgery website states that dermabrasion smoothes the skin reducing the pitted areas. For severely pitted skin, a few treatments spaced several weeks apart maybe required. Dermabrasion is an expensive medical procedure but it offers good results.

Have a dermatologist perform laser resurfacing. This medical treatment uses infrared light to vaporize the scar tissue. The American Society of Dermatologic Surgery website reports that laser resurfacing is one of the best treatments for scars. Unlike dermabrasion, laser resurfacing does not remove the top layer of skin. Instead the surface is not damaged, but the laser's heat promotes new skin cells to grow. Laser resurfacing is more expensive than dermabrasion.

How to Make Long Hair Into a Pixie Cut

It's called the elfin, gamine, urchin or pixie cut. And if you have worn long tresses for years, choosing a pixie cut also is called a huge decision. Perhaps you want to look more grown up, more glamorous, or you simply want to be able to run your fingers through your hair and walk out the door in the morning without a fuss. A New You

Lop off the bottom part of your hair to about chin length to make it easier to handle.

Wash and pat hair dry. Comb through damp hair removing all tangles.

Cut hair from the center of the forehead to begin the bangs. Continue around the head cutting down at an angle, crossing along the temple area toward the earlobe. Cut at an angle back up toward the top of the ear. Stop cutting just below the top of the ear. Repeat on the opposite side.

Cut from the center nape of the neck, sloping up toward the back of the ear to meet the previous cut. Repeat on the other side. The back should gently curve along the neck from one ear to the other.

Create further layers by separating out half-inch sections of hair. Hold the section horizontally, away from the head. Cut the end of the section in a point shape. Continue this layering method, consistently cutting points from left to right around the perimeter of the head.

Tips

- Pixie cuts are most flattering on a women with fine features and a strong bone structure.

- Style with gel or mousse to attain sleek or tousled looks.

Warning

- Work gradually to ensure there are no gaps left in the hair.

Natural Butters, Oils & Plant Extracts Effects on Hair

Men and women alike regard a full head of hair as a prized possession. However, infinite editorials and advertisements in women's magazines suggest that ladies are more concerned about having a good hair day than are gentlemen. Many of these articles encourage a natural approach, proclaiming the virtues of nut oils, butters and plant extracts to help achieve the healthiest hair possible. Does this Spark an idea?

Nut and Seed Oils/Butter

Jojoba, sweet almond, macadamia, kukui, ojon and argan are types of nut or seed oils that fight frizz and rejuvenate dry or processed hair. If the oils are semi-solid at room temperature, they're often referred to as butter. Whether in oil or butter form, they all moisturize the hair and leave it silkier to the touch. In small amounts, jojoba, kukui and argan oils will not weigh hair down or leave an oily residue. A few drops of these chemical-free oils can be added to your usual shampoo or applied after styling to smooth flyaway strands.

Coconut Oil

As a hair conditioner, coconut oil deserves a special class of its own. Centuries ago, women of the Pacific Islands combed coconut oil through their hair to impart a glorious sheen. Western women eventually caught on, for good reason. Coconut oil contains unique, medium-chain fatty acids with a molecular structure small enough to penetrate the membrane of a hair cell. While most conditioners simply coat the hair, coconut oil nourishes from the inside out. These same conditioners use processed vegetable oils as the primary active ingredient, which actually create free radical damage. On the other hand, organic, virgin coconut oil serves as a powerful antioxidant to protect hair from thermal and environmental damage. Massage a teaspoon or two of coconut oil into your damp hair and work it into the scalp. Allow it to remain on the hair for two hours or more; then shampoo and style your hair as usual. This deep conditioning treatment can be performed up to once a week, but be sure to protect your clothes or wear an old top during the process, as the oil can stain fabric.

Horsetail and Rosemary

Horsetail grass contains an important hair nutrient called silica. This mineral works internally to make your strands long, strong and healthy. Silica levels decrease with age, so drinking horsetail tea or taking supplements can help replenish your levels. The herb rosemary also enables hair to grow longer with better elasticity. Used extensively in hair preparations, rosemary makes an excellent rinse when prepared as a tea. For clarity and improved hair texture, try this rinse from herbalist Linda Page: steep fresh sprigs of rosemary in 8 oz. hot water and strain after five minutes. Add 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice and 1 tbsp. white vinegar. Massage through hair and leave on for one minute. Finally, rinse with cool water.

Organic Sulfur

Like silica, sulfur is another mineral critical to gorgeous locks. Hair is made of keratin and the body requires sulfur to create this protein. Normally a diet with plenty of plants would provide all the sulfur a person needs, but due to modern farming methods, fruits and vegetables no longer contain adequate amounts of it. Raw food nutritionist David Wolfe recommends a supplement of organic sulfur called MSM, and he says it will take about two months of daily use to notice greater elasticity, strength and shine within the hair.

Techniques to Seal in Hair Moisture

Many people face the problem of dry hair. From split ends that are super dry to listless hair that won't shine, dull, dry hair is a problem. It doesn't have to be, though. Simply replacing a few techniques or products that you normally use can be a big help in making your hair shiny, manageable and full of moisture. Does this Spark an idea?

Brush with Boar Bristles

Your hairbrush is important for a number of reasons. It detangles and helps you style your hair. One overlooked aspect of the hairbrush is that it helps keep your hair moisturized and shiny. It does this by spreading your scalp's natural oils down to the rest of the hair shaft. The best brush for doing this is one made of natural boar's bristles. If your hairbrush becomes worn, replace it immediately, as worn bristles can actually strip the hair of oils and make it frizzy.

Shampoo Less Often

Most people shampoo their hair everyday in the shower. This can be bad for your hair, especially if you take multiple showers in a day. Shampoos strip hair of their natural oils, which makes hair drier. If you can, try skipping a shampoo and do it every other day instead. See if this helps with the moisture level of your hair. Of course, if you perspire or workout a lot, this may not be possible. However, even skipping one shampoo on the weekends may help strip less moisturizing oils out of your hair.

Conditioning

Conditioning is essential to having moisturized hair. Conditioners add moisture and help reduce frizz by penetrating and coating the hair follicles. Follow the directions on the bottle and make sure to rinse with cool or cold water instead of hot. This helps lock in shine and moisture. It is also a good idea to use a deep conditioner at least once a week, paying particular attention to the ends of hair, which are the driest and can often split.

Products

There are literally thousands of products on the market for hair care, many of them claiming to moisturize your hair. Some of them appear to moisturize your hair because after application, your hair seems shinier and softer. But many of them are oil-based, which means that they are only coating your strands of hair, instead of penetrating them, which locks in moisture long-term. Try using a water-based leave-in moisturizer or conditioner. This type of product will penetrate the hair shaft, which truly moisturizes your hair.

Laser Treatments for Deep Cleaning

The word "laser" is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser treatment is a dentistry practice used for teeth whitening, reshaping gum tissue and treating gum disease. Laser treatment also allows for deep, thorough cleaning of gums and teeth. Different lasers are used to accomplish different tasks. A low-powered carbon laser is the type used for cleaning gums and teeth. Does this Spark an idea?

History

Laser dental treatment was invented in 1960, and was used for procedures on soft tissue (i.e. gums) only. The practice of laser treatment on both soft and hard tissue was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1996. Improvements to laser treatment caused bleeding to be minimized and reduced the need for anesthesia and stitches.

How it Works

A low-powered carbon laser is used for deep cleaning because it doesn't puncture soft tissue, so it can be used for cleaning the gum surface. Despite your daily brushing and flossing, plaque still tends to build up slowly between your teeth and where the teeth and gums meet. The low-powered carbon laser gently cuts away at this buildup. Its heat also kills bacteria. After laser treatment, the dentist uses a water pick to to clear plaque that has been loosened or cut away but is still in your mouth.

Benefits

According to WebMD, laser treatment is less painful than a traditional cleaning that uses sharp metal tools. Laser cleaning is faster, according to World Dental. A laser's narrowly-focused beam allows for more complex cleaning, since it is more precise than traditional dentistry tools. For example, teeth surrounded by gums infected with gum disease can be cleaned without harming the gums. The dentist can also spot a cavity sooner because the laser allows her to see any decay byproducts. Laser treatment can lessen a patient's anxiety because her mouth will not be touched by sharp metal tools.

Limitations

The Consumer Guide to Dentistry estimated in March 2009 that only six percent of American dentists own a laser. A major reason for the limitation is that laser equipment is more expensive than traditional equipment. Moreover, laser treatment for deep cleaning is still relatively new, therefore it will take time for more dentists to be trained how to use the equipment. Unfortunately, some insurance companies might not cover laser treatment for cleaning. You cannot have your teeth cleaned using laser treatment if you have a filling.

Treating Normal to Oily Skin

Normal skin is shiny, a little oily, and the cheeks are dry. Learn about normal to oily skin and how to care for normal skin in this free video from a licensed medical aesthetician.

Video Transcript

Hi, my name is Mary Thinnes I am a skin care expert. I will be discussing the first skin type out of the four. The first one is normal to oily skin. Normal skin ninety seven percent of the population has normal skin and by normal skin I mean the T zone which it runs from the forehead down the nose to the chin and is shiny and generally a little oily or oily and the cheeks are dry. So a lot of times its the skin type that can be deceiving because most people a lot of times will misinterpret it and think its oily skin where as its really normal skin. So it is very important to determine that either your T zone is oily and your cheeks are dry. Then you do have normal skin. Normal skin generally has normal size pores to there not to large not to small. Although they can tent to be a little larger along the T zone on the nose area. Generally to without the use of cosmetics or the blotting pads generally speaking by ten o'clock in the morning the shine does come through if someone is trying to mask that with powder or any kind of cosmetics. With out the use of the blotting pads by ten o'clock in the morning like I said the shine will generally come back through and the cheeks will still remain dry. So that would be how you determine the normal skin type.

How to Cut Hair With Feathering Scissors

Feathering is a technique for softening and texturizing hair ends, layers and bangs. Hair should only be feathered with scissors specified for this technique. Scissors made of a cobalt alloy work well for feathering because of their durability and their ability to break the hair tension while cutting. Stainless steel medium precision scissors with a semiconvex stepped edge are also acceptable for feathering, because they will cut the hair without catching or causing split ends. Well-maintained shears that have been broken in for about six months will perform this technique better than a new pair. Feathering is a cutting technique for texturizing hair, not to be used for the primary haircut. Does this Spark an idea?

Separate a small section of hair. Pull the section tight. Hold the ends of the hair in one hand and the scissors in the other.

Hold your scissors against the hair at an angle between 80 and 90 degrees, open to about two-thirds of the scissors' full capacity. One blade should be on top of the hair section and the other beneath it but not touching it.

Fan the scissor blade across the hair shaft, preparing to cut in a forward direction. You are not snipping with the scissors, but using one of the blades to shave away the hair in varying lengths.

Start feathering up to 5 inches above your fingers along the hair shaft. With short, scraping motions, stroke the scissors along the hair section. The cut hair should fall away as you move closer to your fingers. As you reach the end of the hair, carefully glide the scissors toward your fingers, finishing the ends just as you release the hair section.

Repeat these steps with the next section of hair until all the sections you want to feather are completed. To add more texture to the hair ends, hold the hair section close to the tips between two fingers, and snip at the ends with the scissors held parallel to the hair shaft.

Tips

- Keep section sizes small for more-precise cutting.

- Feathering works well on wet or dry hair.

- Practice this technique on a hair dummy before attempting it on yourself or another person.

- Feathering should be done after the bulk of the haircut is completed. Cut the hair to the desired length, then do the feathering as a final touch.

Warning

- Avoid opening the scissors fully while cutting -- this will cause the hair to catch and cut unevenly.

- A high precision scissor is too sharp for feathering. Using a high-precision scissors may result in catching the skin and hair in the scissors. Working with a scissors that is too sharp will damage the hair and produce split ends.

- Never use scissors designed for other purposes to cut hair.

Wrap Top Instructions

Much like the wrap dress, made popular by designer Diane Von Furstenburg, the wrap top can be adjusted to fit a person's body and drape in such a way to hide flaws while accentuating the positive. Wrap tops close by using tie strings at one side instead of buttons. A wrap shirt can be made with a woven fabric although it is more commonly seen in a knit material.

Wrap Top Preparation

Pick out your pattern and use the fabric recommendations on the back of the pattern envelope to choose the fabric for your shirt. Also buy thread and other necessities such as buttons for decoration.

Pre-wash the fabric. Read the pattern directions and cut out each pattern piece that you need for the project. Using the directions for pattern piece placement, fold the fabric according to the directions and lay it flat on the cutting board. Place the pattern pieces on the fabric according to the directions and pin them to the fabric.

Cut out the pinned pattern and fabric pieces using the solid cutting lines as a guide. Mark placement dots and arrows with the fabric marking pen. Thoroughly read directions for construction.

Constructing the Wrap Top

Put together the shoulders, matching marking dots. Sew together the shoulder seams. Construct tie strings according to the pattern instructions. Place them on the side for later use.

Most patterns will have you attach the collar or facings on the neckline and shirt front. If there is a collar, construct it according to the instructions. Attach collar/facing to the neckline and shirt front by pinning the right sides together according to the the marking dots. Pin one tie string on the facing, according to its marking dot. Stitch the collar/facing down.

Pin the side seams together, matching marking dots. Place the second tie string on the appropriate side seam, according to its marking dot. Sew the sides together. Hem the bottom of the shirt by pressing the bottom of the shirt 1/4 inch towards the inside with an iron. Press up another 1/4 inch and pin the hem before stitching. Stitch down the hem as close to the fold as possible.

Prepare the sleeves by sewing the side seams together after matching marking dots. Hem the sleeves in the same manner as the hem. Place the right side of sleeve top against the right side of the shirt arm hole opening. The shirt should be inside out. Pin the sleeve to the shirt using the marking dots for exact placement. Stitch the sleeve to the shirt.

Tips

- Always pre-wash fabric so that any shrinkage happens before making the garment.

- A cutting board can protect your table or floor from being scratched by pins and scissors.

- Pick the right sewing machine needle for the project. A size 11 needle works for medium weight fabric while a size 14 works best with heavier fabrics such as denim.

- Always press seams open once you sew each section. It will make the garment lie better and cannot be done once the garment is completed.

- Wash the finished garment to remove traces of the marking pen.

Using a gentle, foaming cleanser is the first step the Obagi Nu-Derm System. For normal to dry skin types, the Gentle Cleanser is suitable. For normal to oily skin types, the Foaming Gel is appropriate. Both cleanse the skin of dirt and makeup without interfering with the natural lipid barrier of the skin. The cleanser should be used morning and evening.

Nu-Derm Toner

Toners work to remove the last traces of makeup and go a little further to cleanse the pores of any makeup or dirt left behind. Toners also work to balance the pH of the skin. This will create a clean, even surface on the skin and prepare it for other products that will follow. The toner can be used both morning and evening.

Hydroquinone at the 4 percent level should be prescribed by a skin care professional and patients should be monitored every four to six weeks after starting hydroquinone. Some patients develop more pigmented spots when using hydroquinone.

Choosing Products for Normal to Oily Skin

Cleansing gels are recommended for people with normal to oily skin. Learn about products for normal to oily skin in this free video from a licensed medical aesthetician.

Video Transcript

Hi. My name is Mary Thinnes. I'm a skin care expert. Now, I'll be discussing how to choose the correct products for home use, based on your type of skin that we just mentioned before and what determining what your skin type is. For instance, if you have determined your skin to be a normal to oily, you obviously want to use products that are conducive [ph] for normal to oily skin. Generally speaking, cleansing gels are the ones that are generally that would fall into this category. With cleansing gels, they will have, you know, alpha hydroxy acids, which happens to be good for absorbing oil and correcting that condition in the skin. However, it's something that you don't want to use on a everyday basis. In order to regulate the oil production in your T-zone because like I mentioned before with normal skin, your T-zone, your forehead, nose and chin tend to be a little bit oily. So, if you were to use a product to absorb that oil, not on your whole face, you could use a cleansing gel that has the alpha hydroxy in it on your T-zone and then use a cleansing gel that was just your basic cleansing gel on your cheeks. And like I said I would alternate every other day. I wouldn't use that on a regular basis. So, that's how normal to oily skin type, the cleansing gel is appropriate for.

How Do You Cut a Labradoodle's Hair?

Labradoodles are a mix between a Labradore Retreiver and a Poodle. They shed very little, which make them an ideal dog for owners with allergies. While there are American Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles, both need the same kind grooming starting at seven months old. A Labradoodle's fur will need cutting to ensure his healthy coat remains free of matting and tangles, and his sight isn't obstructed by hair.

Place your Labradoodle onto a table or someplace higher than your waist.

Hold the mat splitter and place your thumb on the curved area. Hold on to a chunk of the dog's skin. Comb the dog with the grain starting at the back near the rear end. Make small strokes downward until you've combed the whole area. Remove the hair from the comb and discard.

Move the comb up the back. Continue combing through the hair going with the grain. Brush downward while holding the skin. Remove the hair and discard. In the same area, comb the hair the opposite way in small strokes.

Place the comb at the top of the head, pull the skin up and comb in several areas. After removing the hair from the comb, place it under the neck and comb downward through the dog's chest. Release the hair from the comb and discard. Pull the hair up the other way and comb against the grain.

Examine your Labradoodle. There will likely be patches of matted hair the comb didn't brush through. Hold the matting taut in your hand and cut it with the scissors. Continue this throughout the dog's coat until the tangles are out.

Pull the hair upward at the top of the muzzle between the eyes. Cut with the scissors two to three inches above the eyes.

Trim hair around the eyes. Hold your Labradoodle's head still or give him a treat to eat and carefully cut any hair obstructing his sight. This may need to be done every three weeks, depending on how fast his hair grows.

Create a rounded look for the face. Notice where the hair sticks out a little longer around the muzzle. Hold a clump of hair in your fingers, twist the hair and cut it off with the scissors. Comb the lip hair downward. Cut with the scissors one inch below the lip.

Shave slightly or thin out the hair around the neck. This enables the ears to lay flat and reduces matting from the ear movement.

Cut the hair around the feet in a rounded style. Trim the hair short around and in between the pads, being careful not to cut into them.

Reassure the dog often. Tell the dog he's doing a good job and pet him while you're combing or during the cutting process. Give treats when needed.

Flip the Labradoodle's ear over. Shave around the ear canal until clean. Clean out the outer ear by pinching and pulling the hair on the outside. Place your fingers gently inside the ear and pluck out little clumps of hair by pinching and gently pulling outward.

Pull the hair on the ears downward between the nose and teeth. Round the hair with a scissors without making the cut blunt.

Hold the Labradoodle's paw in your hand. Place a toenail in the ring guide of the nail clippers. Squeeze the handles so the blade cuts the nail. Repeat on all nails.

Tips

- Groom your dog often so he's relaxed during the process.

- A popular Labradoodle style is to shave the coat down to one inch twice yearly.

- Hemostats help to pull ear hair out.

Warning

- Combing near the rear end and tail can be annoying to the dog.

- Labradoodles are prone to ear infections. Ear powder may help you clean the dog's ears.

Pros & Cons of Mink Oil

Fur-trapping Indians first understood the value of the white fat beneath the fur of the mink as it smoothed their hands. Later in history, ranchers who focused on raising minks for their pelt also experienced the value of this fat and developed it into an oil. Although mink oil has myriad benefits for humans, controversy surrounds it. Does this Spark an idea?

Cosmetics

One advantage of mink oil is its similarity to secretions from humans' sebaceous gland. The oil is also known to help protect human skin from damage. Manufacturers incorporate mink oil into hair care products because it encourages luster and smoothness. The oil does not feel very oily, which makes it an apt choice for skin care products. Beauty experts often recommend that women apply mink oil before donning makeup to improve their faces' finish.

Leather

The fur trappers who first discovered mink oil's benefits also learned that the substance made their leather boots more flexible and resistant to water. The oil is also known to help products made from leather to have an attractive luster and to last longer, with better quality. Mink oil has much in common with the natural oils found in leather.

Odor and Inappropriate Uses

Mink oil can spoil and turn rancid in poor conditions. This spoilage can leave behind an unseemly odor. It can be difficult for you to remove the smell. Also, mink oil can have a negative effect when you use it on certain types of boots. Its ability to soften the texture of leather can diminish the support of boots that are made for work or hiking.

Animal Cruelty

Animal activists cite the lamentable conditions in which minks are commercially farmed. Every year, 26 million minks are slaughtered. Each animal is confined to restrictive conditions, often cages 10 inches wide and 24 inches long. This confinement incites neurotic behavior in the minks, such as tail biting, and can also bring about health problems like ulcers. Rampant inbreeding has also seen the rise of "screw neck" in the royal pastel mink, which causes the animals to turn their heads up awkwardly.

Volumizing Hair Treatments

If you've seen any hair product commercials, then you're familiar with how many hair care companies push products that add volume to your hair. Thin, limp hair is very common but many products on the market can pump up you hair and give you the amazingly voluminous hair you're looking for. Does this Spark an idea?

Shampoo

Choosing a shampoo that increases volume is the first step in treating your hair. A voluminizing shampoo can be easily identified because it says on the bottle that it increases volume or thickens hair. Many hair care companies offer volume-increasing shampoo so you can purchase it anywhere you buy shampoo. However, salons usually carry higher-end products of better quality. Leaving the shampoo in your hair for 5 to 10 minutes increases the volume even more.

Conditioner or Masque

Conditioners for adding volume are different than regular conditioners that can actually weigh hair down. A voluminizing conditioner or masque often contains wheat proteins, which are the key ingredients in a good volume-enhancing hair product. Wheat proteins bond to the hair and increase the thickness of the hair shaft. The best way to achieve the maximum volume from a conditioner or mask is to use a heat cap.

Hot Oil Treatment

Hot oil treatments have been used for years on dry, brittle hair. However, many hot oil treatments help to increase volume and make your hair shiny and healthy at the same time. When choosing a hot oil treatment, check that it is the volume-enhancing kind. Alberto VO5, a well-known name in hot oil treatments, offers a weekly conditioning treatment used in the shower, which adds volume and doesn't have to be heated up.

Thickening Spray

A product sure to give you volume is thickening spray. Many hair care companies offer thickening sprays that you apply on damp hair. You can spray it all over or put it at the roots to pump up the top. It actually adds a coat to the hair strands which make hair visibly thicker and can be used on any type of hair. Companies such as Bumble and Bumble offer excellent thickening sprays.
