How to Cut Hair After Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks are strands of knotted hair which are almost impossible to undo. The easiest way to change a hairstyle from dreadlocks is to cut off the dreads. You are then left with very short hair, which will eventually grow out, but you can cut your hair into an attractive style in the meantime. Does this Spark an idea?

Grow your hair for at least a month before you cut off the dreadlocks. Do not twist or dread the new growth to allow some hair to grow straight.

Hold one dreadlock perpendicular to the head, and cut the dreadlock off between the straight hair and the dreadlock, using a sharp pair of scissors. Repeat this process around the head for all the dreadlocks

Comb out the hair to remove any tangles. If there are pieces of hair that are too tangled to comb, cut out the knots.

Cut around the head so all the hair is of equal length. Use your fingers as a guide to ensure all the hair is the same length.

Wash your hair and apply a conditioner, then rinse it out. Allow naturally curly hair to form in curls around your head. If you have straight hair, trim the hair at the sides, around the ears and at the nape of the neck slightly shorter, taking off about 1/2 inch, to create a layered style.

Tips

- It's tough to cut the back of your own hair; the best thing to do is see a hair stylist for a professional cut.
