What Type of Supplement Can You Take for Oily Skin?

Facial cleansing is an important step in keeping oily skin at bay, but your skin is affected not only by what is on it but by what is underneath it. Proper nutrition can help keep oily skin at bay. Does this Spark an idea?

Vitamin B5

Japanese scientist Dr. Lit-Hung Leung found that people with oily skin who took high doses of Vitamin B5 had reduced levels of oil production. He recommends taking five 500-milligram capsules each day. It can take a month to see any results.

Vitamin C

The proper amount of Vitamin C helps oil-secreting glands in the body work properly, keeping the skin from being too dry or too oily. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends 500 to 1,000 milligrams each day.

Omega-3 Fish Oil

Omega-3 found in fish oil helps keep the hormone androgen from overproducing, causing excess oil production. Randall Neustaedter, OMD, recommends 1,500 mg fish oil capsules or 1 tablespoon cod liver oil per day.

Zinc

Fifty milligrams of zinc taken each day helps control oil production, promotes hormonal balance and enhances the immune system. Acne and oily skin may be a sign of a zinc deficiency.

Warning

Although taking supplements is generally safe, consult your doctor before starting any new supplement to reduce the risk of interactions with prescription medications and other potential complications.
