How to Make Long Hair Into a Pixie Cut

It's called the elfin, gamine, urchin or pixie cut. And if you have worn long tresses for years, choosing a pixie cut also is called a huge decision. Perhaps you want to look more grown up, more glamorous, or you simply want to be able to run your fingers through your hair and walk out the door in the morning without a fuss. Whatever the reason, cutting your hair from long locks to a pixie cut will transform your look and your morning routine. Goodbye tangles! Hello world! Does this Spark an idea?

A New You

Lop off the bottom part of your hair to about chin length to make it easier to handle.

Wash and pat hair dry. Comb through damp hair removing all tangles.

Cut hair from the center of the forehead to begin the bangs. Continue around the head cutting down at an angle, crossing along the temple area toward the earlobe. Cut at an angle back up toward the top of the ear. Stop cutting just below the top of the ear. Repeat on the opposite side.

Cut from the center nape of the neck, sloping up toward the back of the ear to meet the previous cut. Repeat on the other side. The back should gently curve along the neck from one ear to the other.

Work the scissors vertically to create layers and fringe all along the haircut. This will break up the bulky feel of the hair and give it texture. Cut from front to back and continually compare each side of the head to make sure the cut is even. Increase the length of hair as you move in toward the curve and the top of the skull.

Create further layers by separating out half-inch sections of hair. Hold the section horizontally, away from the head. Cut the end of the section in a point shape. Continue this layering method, consistently cutting points from left to right around the perimeter of the head.

Tips

- Pixie cuts are most flattering on a women with fine features and a strong bone structure.

- Style with gel or mousse to attain sleek or tousled looks.

Warning

- Work gradually to ensure there are no gaps left in the hair.
